How Do I Fit into the Social Network?

Filed under: Blog Posts | Tags: | October 13th, 2010

There are many reasons as to why I use different social networks at the current stage in my life including career, connecting with friends who I have not talked to in years, staying in touch with my friends from high school and many other reasons.

In terms of my career I use Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to connect with prospect employers as well as to see what others in my industry of work are offering to the table that maybe I do not have. Facebook is good for connecting with my work when one of us is going to be late or needs someone else to cover a shift that we need to miss. I also like that on Facebook I can link my blog and promote event coming up that I may be involved in or working at. When I post my blog it gives a summary and a photo of my blog that you can just click on and it takes you directly to my blog. I like twitter for similar reasons because you can quickly and easily contact people. The draw back of twitter is there is no instant conversation as well as your messages a limited to a very small length so it is hard to speak with someone unless it is quick and simple. I also find it hard to put anything of relevance on twitter because everyone can see it, you cannot send a private message like you can on Facebook. Also there is no capability for instant chat. I like LinkedIn because it allows me to post my professional information for other professionals to see as well as allow me to see what others in my field are doing and what experience they have had.

I use Facebook for ease of communication with my friends and family. I have moved many times in my life and it has been hard to keep in contact with my friends. Facebook allows me to talk to my friend, see what is happening in their lives as well as see how they are doing in school, sports and how their families are doing. I have moved around a great bit of my life and it has been hard keeping in contact with friends because of time differences, expensive phone bills and just lack of time. With Facebook I am able to contact my friends at any given time free of charge. We can send messages, pictures, videos and all types of other media to show how we are doing and stay just as close as we were when we were in 5th grade. I like Facebook chat because I can talk instantly with my mom everyday while we are hours away. I also like Skype because I can talk to my friends from school over summer and we can still stay in touch and see how they other has changed over summer. I also use Skype to talk with my mom. I enjoy this because this allows me to see her and my three dogs. I miss all my friends and family a lot and the new social media advances have found way for me to deal with missing them.

With the holidays rapidly aproaching it is hard to chose what exactly to get for that special man in your life. Whether it be your husband, boyfriend, dad or grandpa here are a few gift ideas that will have them smiling as they unwrap their surprise.

The first gift I recommend is the Jack Black- Clean & Cool Basics Set.       I have noticed over time that guys can be very picky with their gifts, even more so then girls can be. A good, classic never fail gift for a guy is food. I don’t know many guys who would turn down some good food.

For the Jewish man in your life Hanukkah is coming early and Harry and David has just the thing for him. The Homesake Hanukkah Platewhich includes 6 cookies in the shapes of the Star of David, a dredel and a menorah. You can find this online at harryanddavid.com for $45.95.

For the other men in your life around the holidays is the Harry and David Holiday Sweet Box. This festive box includes an assortment of truffles, raspberry filled shortbread cookies, Dark Chocolate Moose Munch Snack and Bing cherries.

Most guys also like sports memorabilia. it is hard to tell you exactly where to get your choice item because there are so many different sports and athletes so the best way to go about getting a sports item would be to go through a local sports memorabilia shop. A key thing to remember is to make sure it is authentic as well as you are not paying to much money for what you are getting. Do your research and he is sure to love it.

Hopefully these few gift ideas helped you out. Stay tuned for more next week.

From Elegant to Fresh Lace is the Way to Go!

Filed under: Blog Posts | Tags: animal print lace, black lace, fall lace trends, lace, sophisticated lace, work lace | October 4th, 2010

Having been around since the 14th Century lace has seen its fair shares of fashion dos and don’ts! With different patterns and textures lace has taken over for the fall and winter trends. I am going to show how to wear it and how wearing lace can go wrong. The drawback of wearing lace is that it can very easily become risky to wear because you might be overexposed.

A good way to wear lace for a nice dinner date or semi formal occasion would be: The Josie Natori Animal Print Lace Dress…

Available at Sacks 5th Avenue for $425

This dress has a scoop neck and wide straps that creates a very Jackie O look with a modern women sexiness because of the lace and ribbon touches.

Another good option in this category would be the: Kay Unger Rossette One Shoulder Lace Overlay Dress

This dress can be found at Sacks 5th Avenue for $450

This dress has an asymmetrical neck line to draw attention to the face with a strap that has large black roses eliminating the need for a necklace.

Now here are some semi formal lace options that just don’t work: This is the Black Long Sleeve
Lace Homecoming Dresses by Sentimental NY
.

I don’t recommend this dress if you can purchase it for $130.

This dress has v neck lace collar and exposes the midriff as well as being very short. A dress like this screams gold digger as well as easy. Although if this is your style i mean no afence but a dress like this is not classy nor should it be worn to a semi formal event.

A big part of lace is bringing it into the work place. Lace is again hard to pull off in certain situations but here are a few that work.

The first is the: Oscar de la Renta Lace & Chiffon Short Sleeve Blouse.

This blouse is available at sacks 5th avenue for $990

This blouse is made of lace but had a silk and chiffon ruffle to add a little female touch to the edgy style. It is short sleeved with a peep hole that ties shut.

An bad example of lace in the office would: The Ralph Lauren Collection Silk Lace Tee.

This shirt is available for $1698

This shirt holds a lot of potential but the lace just shows to much and is not appropriate for the work place. The round neck gives it a conservative look but the see thoroughness and shape of it will draw more attention to the “girls” and not near enough to your full potential.

The Perfect Winter Coat

Growing up on the East Coast as fall and winter approached my grandma always took me shopping to get a winter coat. Now that I live in Arizona the need for a jacket isn’t so necessary; but for those who don’t live in the hot spots of Arizona here are a few tips on how to find that perfect winter jacket to keep you warm and looking good.

The Plaid Belted looks This year plaid and belted wastes are the “it thing” to have. The reasons why this combination works so well is because the belted waste highlights the slimiest part of your torso and gives the illusion of a slimmer waste and longer legs and the plaid gives the illusion of a more slender you and elongates your body with the vertical lines. One of my favorite stores to shop in for winter jackets is Whit House/ Black Market. Though they are a little pricy they have all the runway looks at a cheaper price. The designers there add an extra flair to their clothing to make it stand out from the rest. A perfect example of this is their Modern Plaid Ruffle Coat. This classic fit jacket has a five button front with a removable belt. There is a convertible collar and ruffles that cascade around the neck adding an extra pop in the coat to bring attention up to your face.

This jacket is available at White House/Black Market for$188

This jacket is available at White House/ Black Market for $188.

Like i said before, they can get a little expensive. A good less expensive alternative to this coat would be Macy’s BCX Coat. this long sleeved plaid jacket is a predominantly white jacket that takes classic plaid to the next level with a bold touch. It also features a mock neck to eliminate the need for a scarf. Though this coat does not have a belt it is tapered to fit the body at the same accent areas as a belt would giving you the same slimmer and longer look.

This Jacket is available at Macy's for $79.00

The Capelet Look(aka the Cape)- The old classic French cape is taking a spin back into modern times. 16th Century fashion that has been apart of French life is hitting the American runways this year with edgy modern lines. I have also pulled a few capes that are plaid and look like jackets to match the growing plaid trend. The first cape I want to show is from Saks 5th Avenue and it is the Fendi Wool & Cashmere Cape. The reason I picked this cape to be is because it is the classic design mixed with a modern New York feel. The gray blend of wool fleece and cashmere make for an incredibly soft incredibly warm cape. It snaps closed down the front and is lined with silk to hold in your body warmth.

This capelet is available at Saks 5th avenue for $2280.

For a more classical looking cape I would chose something similar to the Yves Saint Laurent Exaggerated cape. This cape is a very classic French look and stays true to the cut of capes when they were initially popular but also has a contemporary look making it timeless.

This cape is available at Saks 5th Avenue for $2650

Again I feel that if i can pay my rent for 3 months with one cape it is just a little to much money. A good alternative to the Fendi cape would be Macy’s Ralph Lauren’s Military Wrap. This wrap is made of  lambs wool and though it is a little differently cut it incorporates the same gray color and keeps with the modern theme with the military inspiration in the trim and cut of the cape.

This cape is available at Macy's for $150

Another more resonably priced cape is the American Apparel California Fleece Cape.  I personally like this cape because it is fun, edgy and comes in multi colors but still has the classic cut of a capelet. The French inspired garment meets California style in this cape. This cape comes in black, navy blue and red.

This cape is available at American Apparel for $65.

It is sometimes hard to find that perfect winter coat. remeber it had to make you look good, feel confident and and comfortable. These jacket suggestions may not be your style or for you. Go out there and find what you like just remember the few tips in here to help you out with the trend of the jacket (belted waste, retro chic styles, and plaids).

How to Find Your Little Black Dress

Filed under: Blog Posts | Tags: BCB Generation, Black, Cross Over Pintucked dress, Dress, Little, Little Black Dress, Yves Saint Laurent BLack Dress | September 19th, 2010

Whenever I am in a bind and not sure what to wear I always have my backup plan… My Little Black Dress! This classic little black dress is an essential that belongs in every women’s closet. This dress can go with any pair of shoes, any purse or any shawl. It can be worn on the first date or the 27th date or even to work when accessorized properly.

It is hard to find the perfect little black dress for you though. Your personality influences how you wear it, style it and how it looks on. My personal favorite dress is fitted, sexy and timeless. This is why I go with the classic strapless knee length little black dress.

  • If you are looking to go the designer rout Yves Saint Laurent has the dress for you. The Yves Saint Laurent Embroidered Strapless Dress is about $2,450.  The dress goes just above the knee and has an empire waistline to make the waist look slimmer.

  • If you feel that 2 months paycheck spent on a dress is a lot then you will love this deal. Macy’s sells a BCB Generations Strapless Chain Dress dress for$118. This dress is a little shorter the the Yves dress but it also has more flair with  a gold tone chain at the front of the dress to make it look a little more edgy. I would pair this dress with black studded heels and a gold tones purse for a good look in the club.

  • Again if you think this is to much money There are some even better deals. JC Penny sells a strapless knee length black dress for $39.99. The Crossover Satin Pin-tucked Dress creates a slimming waist line with the design of the fabric and the “X” pattern around the waste. This dress would be perfect paired with silver peeped toe heels and silver purse.

I would pair all of these dresses with a pair of red heels and my favorite shade of runway red lipstick for a night out with the girls. You could also throw on a pair of nude peep toe heels, a colorful shawl with matching earrings and you are ready to go meet his parents.

The little black dress is so versatile and can be worn for almost any occasion if accessorized appropriately. Also you don’t need to buy an expensive dress. I got my little black dress from New York and Company for $25. The price isn’t what matters; it is how the dress makes you feel that matters.
